ASE MASTER MECHANIC TEST NOTES & FLAWS NOTED DURING TESTING: (1 – RUNNING ENGINE TEST NOTES): Engine runs good with smooth idle and strong wide-open throttle snap. Radiator was not impacted, so coolant supply was intact. A little wastegate rattle was heard on cold start, which may also indicate a crack in the turbocharger; this is common on these engines. (2 – POST REMOVAL INSPECTION NOTES): Overall engine looks good. Inspector noted oil leaks at the timing cover and oil filter stand. Also found hairline cracks in the turbo manifold, a common issue, and suggested using the customer’s turbo if in better condition along with replacing gaskets. As always, replacement of standard service and wear items (timing components, plugs, injectors, pumps, seals, gaskets, filters) is recommended prior to installation.

In-car test: ENGINE RUNS GOOD, IDLE IS NICE AND SMOOTH AND WIDE OPEN SNAP SOUNDS GOOD. RADIATOR WASNT HIT SO COOLANT SUPPLY WASNT COMPROMISED. DID NOTE A LITTLE WASTE GATE RATTLE ON COLD START OR MAY BE A CRACK IN TURBOCHARGER (COMMON TO THESE) WILL INSPECT OUT OF CAR. PENDING A COMPRESSION TEST AND PHYSICAL CHECK THIS WILL BE A UNIT.

Out-of-car inspection: OVERALL ENGINE LOOKS GOOD, DID NOTE OIL LEAKING AROUND TIMING COVER AND OIL FILTER STAND. ALSO NOTED THERE ARE SOME HAIRLINE CRACKS IN TURBO MANIFOLD AND I SUGGEST USING CUSTOMERS IF ITS IN BETTER SHAPE AND REPLACING THE GASKETS AS WELL. AS ALWAYS, RECOMMEND ANY SERVICE AND WEAR ITEMS SUCH AS TIMING CHAINS, BELTS, GUIDES , TENSIONERS, SPARK PLUGS , INJECTORS, PUMPS, SEALS ,GASKETS AND FILTER BE SERVICED BEFORE ENGINE BE PUT BACK INTO SERVICE.
